The Earthquakes is a professional soccer team for the Major League Soccer. The Earthquakes won the MLS Cup during the 2001 and 2003 year, with star player Landon Donovan. In 2005, the owner brought the team to Houston and was renamed to the Houston Dynamo. However, the Dynamo was considered an expansion team so the Earthquakes team name, records, and history remained in San Jose without an actual team. Until now. The Earthquakes are getting the band back together!
The Earthquakes will be competing in MLS for the 2008 season. Since the previous team moved to Houston, the current team is not carrying a full roster. One of the Quakes' first move was to hire former LA Galaxy coach Frank Yallop as the new head coach of the Earthquakes. The second move is to hold open tryouts to fill out the roster list.
The Earthquakes Tryout Tour is a multi-city scouting event for athletically skilled players to get their shot at playing for a professional soccer team. Having stopped in Sacramento and Santa Rosa, the Quakes hosted tryouts at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
When we arrived, the players were already on the field and engaged in a scrimmage game. I don't know if they announced the players' names or had any introduction for the Quakes' personnel. Besides the players wearing bright colored jerseys, there were maybe four or five people that I would guess as being coaches and assistants.
There was light rain during the day, but that didn't deter the fans. A quick estimate of spectators watching the tryout comes in at around 50 to 60. It also didn't stop the players from giving it their all to earn a spot on the Earthquakes roster.
The scrimmage game we saw was between the green team and the orange team. The green team was dominant against the orange team. The players on the green team was quicker to the ball and showed good teamwork. We witnessed one goal during that scrimmage, with the green team scoring on the orange team. The players were getting set to switch up some players and play another scrimmage game. Then the rain started down hard. And we left. If these scrimmage players comprised the entire Quakes team, we will be in deep shit. Thankfully, only a select few from the tryout will make it to the team.
