Horse races push on at Golden Gate Fields in the Bay Area. The race season has just ended at Bay Meadows, but the season will begin at Golden Gate Fields. With all the uncertainty regarding the future of Bay Meadows, Golden Gate Fields offers confidence and reassurance.
To kick off their season, Golden Gate Fields is running a Dollar Day promotion this Saturday, November 10th. $1 General Admission, $1 parking, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 sodas, and $1 beers. The hot dogs aren't very big, about your standard sized hot dog. They will be gone in about three bites. The sodas and beers are about 12 ounces from the tap in a plastic cup. But $1 admission and $1 parking offers a great value. Where else can you get an entire day's worth of entertainment for two bucks?
Other promotions Golden Gate Field is running are free long-sleeve shirt day on Saturday, November 17th, and a TV giveaway on Sunday, December 2nd, in which a 42" Plasma TV will be given away after every race. They are also running additional Dollar Days throughout the racing season as well as another TV giveaway for Superbowl Sunday.
But its not all fun and games at the tracks. The California Horse Racing Board had imposed a January 2008 deadline for all California racetracks to use a polymer synthetic type racing surface. Bay Meadows has not upgraded to the turf surface and still uses dirt for their racing surface. Bay Meadows will not be allowed to operate if they do not upgrade their facility. The Racing Board has given Bay Meadows a special exemption to operate for one more year. Chances are slim that Bay Meadows can continue to operate after that extension if they do not upgrade to turf.
Golden Gate Fields will have no problems meeting the synthetic surface requirement, as they have already upgraded their tracks. Golden Gate Fields is now using a Tapeta polymer surface. This is great news for Bay Area race fans as they can still enjoy horse racing locally.
Horse racing, nicknamed the Sport of Kings, is a fast paced sporting event. The horses go fast and the money even faster. Unexpected late scratches and upset wins will frustrate even the most seasoned fan. But I wouldn't expect anything less.
Golden Gate Fields have been around since World War II and enjoys a great history. Golden Gate Fields was home to popular race horse, Lost in the Fog. The Fields are located in the Albany / Berkeley area and easily accessible by car or public transportation. Directions to Golden Gate Fields can be found on their website.
