NFL's Living Legend Brett Favre Retires

The NFL's Living Legend, quarterback Brett Favre, is said to announce his retirement. Even at the tender age of 38, Favre still had a cannon of an arm, which is a lot more than what I can say for Alex Smith. After 17 seasons and 275 consecutive starts, Brett Favre will walk away.

Bay Area fans probably remember Brett Favre best during the 1990s, when the Packers were consistent playoff opponents to the 49ers in the NFC. If Favre wasn't as good as he was, the 49ers could have easily won more championships in the 90s.

Favre's retirement comes off a terrific season that had the Green Bay Packers going to the NFC Championship game. Favre also threw 28 touchdown passes and maintained a quarterback rating of 95.7. The Packers fell short to the eventual SuperBowl winners, the New York Giants.

A twist in the timing of the retirement announcement is the news of Randy Moss resigning with the New England Patriots. It had long been rumored that Brett Favre lobbied hard for the Packers to sign Randy Moss last off-season. It had been said that if Moss signed with the Green Bay Packers this year, Favre would not retire. Moss resigned with the Patriots a few days ago.

With the retirement of Brett Favre, it appears the Packers will be led by backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was the second quarterback selected (#24 overall) in the 2005 draft; the first qb picked (#1 overall) was Alex Smith, by the 49ers. 49er fans will finally get to see if we made the right decision selecting Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers.
