NFL Spygate Gets Boring

There was a big media frenzy when the Patriots were caught taping call signals from the New York Jets at the start of the 2007 season. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell dished out $750,000 worth of fines and took away the Patriots' first round draft pick. Months later, a Boston Herald report cited an anonymous source's claim that the Patriots taped the St. Louis Rams' walk-through before Super Bowl XLII (2002), which gave the underdog Patriots the competitive advantage and allowing them to defeat the Rams.

Low and behold, fingers started pointing at Matt Walsh as the anonymous source. Matt Walsh worked as a video department employee for the New England Patriots from 1997 - 2003. Walsh, for his part, has said he is in possession of videos that the Patriots taped of opposing teams, but would not give up the tapes without some legal agreement with the NFL.

After a long stalemate, a deal was finally agreed to upon by all parties involved. Walsh did his part in sending the tapes to the NFL offices. Except that none of the tapes he sent included the St. Louis Rams walk-through. None of the tapes were walk-throughs at all, only in-game signal calls. The teams included in the tapes are Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

We were duped. There is no Rams walk-through video. This is an attempt by Matt Walsh to gain his 15 minutes of fame and pawn some endorsement deals. Walsh's lawyer had this to say about the situation:

"Mr. Walsh has never claimed to have a tape of the walk-through," said Walsh's lawyer Michael Levy, according to the Times. "Mr. Walsh has never been the source of any of the media speculation about such a tape. Mr. Walsh was not the source for the Feb. 2 Boston Herald article."

If Walsh has no tape on the Super Bowl walk-through, why didn't he just say so? All he had to do is issue that same statement months ago, and we wouldn't have to deal with this. But the dude has got to be real busy, with him being an assistant golf pro in Hawaii... that's just a fancy title for "golf caddy".
