The San Francisco 49ers just won over the Cincinnati Bengals at home. Leading the Niners to the win tonight was quarterback Shaun Hill. Even as a Bay Area resident, I had no idea who he was. It seems Hill has been bounced around the practice squads of various NFL teams. His career stats show 2 rush attempts at -1 yards each for the Minnesota Vikings in 2005. A -1 yard rush attempt for QBs is usually a kneel down.
Shaun got his first playing time last week, after Trent Dilfer got knocked out of the game with a concussion. Shaun would complete the rest of the game with a 106.9 quarterback rating on 22 of 27 for 181 yards and 1 TD. Getting his first ever start at QB, Shaun completes 21 out of 28 for 197 yards, 1 passing TD and 1 rushing TD. That's hot.

For the 49ers faithful, Shaun Hill brings the light. With the recent public bitching and moaning between coach Nolan and injured quarterback Alex Smith, there shows little chance of having both Nolan and Smith back next year. The early consensus was to fire Nolan and keep Smith, but that was before Shaun Hill strutted his stuff.
There IS a quarterback controversy in San Francisco. Alex Smith has had his chances to prove his worth as a #1 pick. In my opinion, he has not lived up to the role. Trent Dilfer was brought in to be a veteran mentor to Alex Smith, and it appears he has failed in that regards. Dilfer is not the future of the franchise.
I'd say get rid of Alex Smith, but keep coach Nolan. It is a lot easier to bitch slap a coach and have the offensive and defensive coordinators take on the heavy responsibilities than it is to convert a weak-armed, inaccurate quarterback into a Dan Marino. Plus it seems this Shaun Hill guy might be pretty good. I'm all aboard the Shaun Hill bandwagon!
