49ers Are Dumb - Resigns Alex Smith

The San Francisco 49ers picked up the options for the 2009 and 2010 seasons for quarterback Alex Smith. What a dumb move, considering that Smith has not been named the starting quarterback for next season. Alex Smith will actively compete against Shaun Hill in training camp for the starting position.

This San Francisco Chronicle story reports that 2008 could have been Alex Smith's last season if the team had not picked up the option. Man, we were this close to getting rid of the chump. When the team drafted Smith, there were high hopes. There were also a lack of good quarterback choices in the draft. It was Alex Smith, or perennial benchwarmer Aaron Rodgers.

The 49ers hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator. Martz might be best known for the SuperBowl champion St. Louis Ram's "greatest show on turf" offense. The centerpiece of a Mike Martz passing system is a pocket quarterback with an accurate throw.

Out of the two, Shaun Hill is a better fit for the new passing system. Alex Smith is a mobile quarterback, who can throw on the run. Smith just can't get comfortable in the pocket. Smith also has a wimpy arm.

If Alex Smith cannot win the starting quarterback job this coming season, then the 49ers will end up with an $8 million backup quarterback. And he will be backing up a starting quarterback making $2 million. That's just not right.

It's pretty obvious that if they let him go then Nolan will look bad since he drafted him. Even if Hill does better in the preseason, Smith will probably end up starting.

It would look poorly on the organization if Alex Smith does not start, but I still believe Shaun Hill is a better fit than Smith. I hope Smith gets a season ending injury during training camp.
