49ers Add Role Players on Day 2

On Day 2 of the 2008 NFL Draft, San Francisco went with safe picks and also grabbed a couple local kids.

With the 75th overall pick in the 3rd round, the San Francisco 49ers selected DB Reggie Smith out of Oklahoma. This pick was the one swapped with the Chicago Bears as a penalty for the Lance Briggs tampering.

Reggie Smith is a CB-FS tweener. His speed is not that fast for a corner so he may end up as a free safety in the end. Someone to compete with Mark Roman.

With the 107th overall pick in the 4rd round, the San Francisco 49ers selected C Cody Wallace out of Texas A&M. Wallace would still have been available in the 5th round, but without a 5th round pick due to the Briggs tampering, the team was forced to pick him 4th.

Wallace was a leader for Texas A&M at the center position. With Eric Heitmann's poor play last season and David Bass' inexperience at center, Wallace may have been chosen as a backup if Heitmann does not to return to form and Bass cannot recover from his pec injury in time.

If they had the 5th round pick, Wallace would have been taken in the 5th and the 4th round pick would most likely have been used on a wide receiver. Plenty of wide receivers were on the board at the time including Sweed and Campbell.

With the 174th overall pick in the 6th round, the San Francisco 49ers selected WR Josh Morgan out of Virginia Tech. At 6-foot-1 210 pounds, Morgan was scouted to have playmaking abilities with good speed and separation abilities. But, he also lacked concentration resulting in a number of easy drops and was considered an underachiever.

His stock also dropped due to his poor showing in the combines. Rumors had it that he was injured at the time of the combine and should have been faster than he showed. So he may be a steal for the Niners if the rumor is true.

With the 214th overall and their final pick in the 7th round, the San Francisco 49ers selected OLB Larry Grant out of Ohio State. Grant played a bit for CCSF and had been a fan of the Niners. Besides being a local kid, Grant is known more for his special teams play than anything else.

Of the undrafted free agents, the Niners only released the name of WR Cam Colvin out of Oregon as being signed. The team plans on signing 6 or 7 more undrafted free agents for camp.
