It is time to admit that the Chris Webber project has failed. Before the Warriors acquired Webber, there were high hopes for what a player of Chris Webber's caliber could bring to the team. Webber could help defensively in the paint and he gives the team another option for half-court offense. After nine games, we have yet to see the benefits.
If someone would have told you, at the start of the season, that bringing in Chris Webber would have the same effect as an Austin Croshere, would you have believe them? Chris Webber is averaging 3.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while getting 14.0 minutes per game. In comparison, Austin Croshere is averaging 4.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.7 assists while only getting 10 minutes per game.
Even with the failed Chris Webber project, the Golden State Warriors are still winning. This season has been the Warriors best season in recent memory, out-pacing last year's Cinderella playoff team. However, in the wild and crazy Western conference, it is only good for 8th seed.
The Phoenix Suns have looked slow and sluggish after the acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal. The Warriors are only 2.5 games behind the Phoenix Suns in the standings. If the Suns continue faltering, the Suns have a good chance of dropping out of the playoffs.
The lesson to learn here is that adding an old big man with bad knees to a team mid-season is a bad move. Webber and Shaq have not helped their respective teams. In some ways, the moves might have hurt the teams. The Suns lost Shawn Marion, and Webber hogs up valuable minutes that could be given to better players.
