FIBA Americas Rolls On

The FIBA Americas Championship 2007 tournament is happening now at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV in Las Vegas. Team USA rolled through their first opponent last night, on opening night, winning 112 - 69 over Venezuela. Uruguay won 88 - 84 over Panama. Brazil beat Canada 75 - 67. Mexico wins 100 - 89 over Puerto Rico.

Today was Day 2 of the 12 day tournament. Today's game had Argentina scoring 90 points to defeat Uruguay at 69 points. Canada wins over Venezuela 80 - 73. Puerto Rico smashes Panama, 108 - 67. Team USA continues to bowl over their opponents, winning 123 - 59 over the Virgin Islands.

As I'm watching the Argentina vs Uruguay game on ESPN, I start to wonder if I am watching a D-League game. If Team USA does not steamroll this tournament with a perfect record, then there is something really wrong. Blame it on the unknown players, blame it on being the middle of the week, but the arena for the Argentina vs Uruguay game was virtually empty. A few audience members can be seen, but just a handful. Reminds me of a Florida Marlins game. Even the WNBA games have more viewers.

Team USA is comprised of many young players. Young players often get overly confident and lose focus. With Team USA's two early blow-outs, I hope they continue to play hard and keep up the pressure on the other teams. I have confidence in Coach K. He's used to dealing with spoiled brats who wants to be the star of the team, so Coach K should be more than adequate in dealing with these young players. At least JJ Redick isn't on the team anymore. Smart move, Coach.

In both games, the team seems to lose their creativity when either kidd, lebron, or kobe aren't in the game. It becomes a bunch of athletic guys passing around the perimeter until someone hoists up a three.

Yea, they haven't faced any competition yet. The backups could have played the whole game and the score would probably be the same. Michael Redd and Mike Miller is lighting it up from three point land. Team USA wants to prove they can shoot it when the teams are playing zone D. One more week til the FIBA finals, woohoo!
