Golden State Warriors Chris Webber has announced his retirement from the NBA. While his current stint with the Warriors was ill-fated, Webber finishes with a solid career spanning 15 years.
Chris Webber was an All Star caliber player, taking the Sacramento Kings to the Western Conference finals before losing Game 7 against the Los Angeles Lakers. But that was years ago. His bum knee has robbed him of his mobility and quickness. It got to the point where Webber's per minute production was being compared to Austin Croshere.
Even though it was many years ago, I still remember the Warriors with Chris Webber, Latrell Sprewell, and Tim Hardaway. Watching the Warriors play basketball on KICU 36 were the good old days. Before the acquisition of Baron Davis, that was the last time the Warriors were relevent. After Chris Webber left the team, the team sucked for a long time.
During the trade deadline earlier this season, the Warriors name appeared in several trade rumors. Besides the signing of Chris Webber to the team, there was also talks of a possible Jermaine O'Neal trade. Back then, I had wished the team pull the trigger on that deal.
Thinking back on it, it seems that both players would not have made much of an impact. Webber is slow and can't move. O'Neal is injured and has yet to play in a NBA game after his injury. Maybe the Warriors should have traded for Ronny Turiaf instead.
