2008 WNBA Season Starting at Wrong Time

The 2008 WNBA season tips off this Saturday with a match-up between the defending champs Phoenix Mercury and the top draft pick Candice Parker's Los Angeles Sparks. Maybe someone should tell the WNBA execs to hold off for a month, because there's something more exciting going on in the world of professional basketball: the NBA playoffs.

Coincidently, there will be no NBA playoff game on Saturday. There will be a double-header of NBA games on Friday night, and if neccessary, one game on Sunday and two on Monday. It's hard to tell if the NBA planned to vacate the WNBA opening day or if the playoff series worked in favor of the WNBA.

The Phoenix Mercury won the championship last year with their big three of Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter, and Penny Taylor. The coaching staff for the Mercury must have met with the Phoenix Suns because the Mercury employ a run'n'gun three-point shooting style of offense similar to their NBA counterpart. If there's one team in the WNBA to watch, it is probably the Phoenix Mercury.

The Los Angeles Sparks won a few WNBA titles, but did poorly last year due to the Sparks' star player Lisa Leslie taking time off for maternity leave. The poor season landed the Sparks the top pick in this year's draft in which they selected Candice Parker. The duo of Leslie and Parker have the critics proclaiming the Sparks as the favorite to win the title this season. Interesting trivia fact: Candice Parker's nickname is "CP3", for her initials and her jersey number 3. Chris Paul of the NBA New Orleans Hornets also has the nickname of "CP3" for the exact same reason.

The sad truth is that I'll be away at a BBQ this Saturday and will not be able to watch the tipoff of the WNBA season. And you know, I really, really wanted to watch the WNBA...
