The path to Barry Zito's win was tough for the team, having to endure a six-game losing streak. But, it was all worth it when Zito finally was able to get his first win of the season, against the same Marlins that gave Brandon Webb his first loss of the season.
Monday, May 12, 2008 :: Giants 3 - Astros 7
Barry Zito had a quality start against the Astros, limiting them to 3 runs in 6 innings. The bullpen was unable to hold the Astros down afterwards, giving up 4 runs in the next two innings. Lance Berkman was the star of the game as he has been for the entire season. He jacked a two run homer to chase Zito out of the game thus ensuring Zito would not get his first win against the Astros.
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 :: Giants 4 - Astros 2
Matt Cain had another impressive outing going for 8 strong innings and helping his cause by hitting his 2nd homerun of the year. Fred Lewis bounced back from the previous game and went 3 for 4, a homerun short of a cycle. Brian Wilson had his first 1-2-3 inning for his NL leading 12th save.
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 :: Giants 3 - Astros 6
Pat Misch is Barry Zito's ceiling. A pitcher who can locate his pitches on both sides of the plate as indicated in his 6-inning 3-run 6-strikeouts 0-walk game. Aaron Rowand smacked his 5th homerun of the season, but he was upstaged by Lance Berkman's 14th and Brad Ausmus 1st that gave the Astros and insurmountable lead late in the game.
Thursday, May 15, 2008 :: Giants 7 - Astros 8
Giving up 3 runs in 6 innings seemed to be the trend lately; the scenario was the same for Tim Lincecum. Although, Timmah had 10 strikeouts in his outing. The Giants had a 7-3 lead heading into the eighth, but the bullpen imploded and gave up 5 runs in two innings. Lance Berkman was the hero again for the Astros, hitting the game-winning homerun in the 9th inning.
Friday, May 16, 2008 :: Giants 0 - White Sox 2
The Giants must be the unluckiest team in existance. Every opposition player seems to either get their first hit, their first stolen base, their first win, their first extra base hit, or their first save against the Giants. Today it was Alexei Ramirez's turn. Ramirez hit a 2-run homerun off Jonathan Sanchez; the homerun was the first of his career. The Giants' offense could do nothing as they were shut out by the vaunted White Sox pitching staff.
Saturday, May 17, 2008 :: Giants 1 - White Sox 3
Barry Zito's lack of control cost him the game and extended his losing streak to eight. Zito walked six batters and gave up eight hits in five innings of work. The Giants sputtering offense offered no support as the only run scored on a ground out.
Sunday, May 18, 2008 :: Giants 8 - White Sox 13
The Giants' offense sprung to life after the previous lackluster games, scoring 8 runs on 10 hits. But, the White Sox offensive explosion was much larger scoring 13 runs on 15 hits. Seven of those thirteen runs were off the Giants bullpen which had not fared well lately.
Monday, May 19, 2008 :: Giants 3 - Rockies 4
Vinnie Chulk gave up the winning run in the bottom of sixth as the Giants took their 6th loss in a row. At least the Giants were able to show off some of the young pitching talent they brought up from the minors. Alex Hinshaw has great stuff, a fastball in the mid-90s and solid control. What makes it even more impressive is that he throws left-handed!
Tuesday, May 20, 2008 :: Giants 6 - Rockies 5
It was a good thing the Giants scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth off a Fred Lewis homer and an Aaron Rowand RBI single because Brian Wilson decided to make the ninth inning interesting again. He gave up a two-run homer to Clint Barnes to pull the Rockies within one. But, he was able to settle down afterwards and notch another save. Tim Lincecum was the benefactor or the Giants offensive surge as he pushed his record to 6-1 on the year.
Wednesday, May 21, 2008 :: Giants 3 - Rockies 2
Omar Vizquel turned back the clock and started the rally in the ninth which led to the team tying the game 2-2. In the 10th inning with a runner on third, Vizquel hit a sacrifice fly to score the eventual game-winning homerun. Brian Wilson pitched a decent 10th inning to get his second save in as many days.
Friday, May 23, 2008 :: Giants 8 - Marlins 2
Hoping to avoid becoming the first pitcher in Giants' history to begin the season 0-9, Barry Zito came through limiting the vaunted Florida Marlins' team to one run on three hits in six innings. The Giants' offense muscled up and hit three homeruns in the game. Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand's back-to-back homeruns in the 4th inning was the first b2b of the season. Jose Castillo capped off the Giants' power showcase by hitting his third homerun of the season in the 8th.
Way to go Zito!
