Vizquel to Have Knee Surgery
By JANIE McCAULEY – 1 hour ago
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee.
The 11-time Gold Glove winner is expected to miss four-to-five weeks. Vizquel tested his knee on the field again Tuesday but said the pain was too much to handle. Vizquel will have the operation to repair his torn cartilage on Wednesday in the Bay Area.
Manager Bruce Bochy plans to use Kevin Frandsen at shortstop while the 40-year-old Vizquel is sidelined.
Without Vizquel, the San Francisco Giants will most likely not be able to get off to a good start and will miss the playoffs this coming season. The loss of his veteran leadership and steady defense up the middle will no doubt be sorely missed.
But, this injury provides an opportunity for the young players to gain some experience. The team can also tank the rest of the season to position themselves for a good pick position in next year's draft.
Sad, sad day.
NOTES: Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets was found to have a fractured foot and will be out for the season, ending the Rockets' playoff hopes.
